There is no greater power than that of community
Investing in our community doesn’t just feel good, it’s good business. Our philanthropic strategy is simple: it’s about Maine. We want to make it clear that when you support Bissell Brothers, your money is going to support Maine and those that call it home. Our industry touches so many facets including farm and agrarian development, thriving arts and culture, health and humanity, fisheries and wildlife conservation, clean water protection, animal stewardship, and community development. We invest in these areas to continue the cycle, and remain committed to helping our community flourish.
Thanks to your support, Bissell Brothers is able to give back at least $50,000 each year to Maine-based organizations. Thank you.
an uncommon time
2020 and 2021 have brought many new challenges to our community and guests. Since March of last year, we have been open for curbside only. We have missed your smiling faces, your raucus laughter, your handshakes and stories. To us, beer is a means to connection with one another - the great facilitator. We sit around the table and trade tales, celebrate milestones, and let the day's stress wash away. The pandemic has put all of our resilience abilities to the test, but we are confident that we will be seeing you all at the bar in the near future. Thank you for your continued support of our brewery, our team and our beer.
investing in Maine
The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital
As of 2019, we have donated over $20,000 since Bissell Brothers was founded, and we are on track to contribute much more over the years. We feel fortunate to be involved with such a wonderful organization right in our neighborhood!
Friends of Baxter State Park
Bissell Brothers has pledged 3% of all taproom Preserve and Protect can sales to Friends of Baxter State Park. By purchasing P&P cans in our tasting room, you are also supporting our mission that means that you’re part of the solution! In 2018, Bissell Brothers was able to donate over $5,000 to FBSP and we will continue to do so throughout the years.
Full Plates Full Potential
Through our partnership, we have worked with Full Plates to set up food centers in Milo during the summer months when kids are in summer school, and even when they’re out of session. Full Plates Full Potential also hosts an annual fundraiser bowling tournament at Bayside Bowl in Portland. We are proud to have been able to participate in the event for two years and counting!
Maine Farmland Trust
We have formed a partnership with Maine Farmland Trust which, in its 20 years of service, has protected 300 farms and nearly 60,000 acres of farmland throughout the state while supporting over 900 farm families with services to grow strong businesses.
In its nearly 30 years, Portland Trails has cultivated a massive web of trails and pathways spanning 70 miles through the Greater Portland area. The trails service the area’s 300,000 residents and have big plans in the coming years!
Portland Museum of Art
Art for All is an initiative that supports the PMA's dedication to being an open, accessible, inclusive, and welcoming museum for all, through exhibitions and programs that reflect our community and create experiences with art that strengthen our bonds and bring us together.
Clean Water Initiatives
Sebago Clean Waters
Sebago Clean Waters aims to protect water quality, community well-being, a vibrant economy, and fish and wildlife in the Sebago region through voluntary forestland conservation. These forests generate, filter, and sustain the Greater Portland area’s water supply, which is among the 50 cleanest in the country.
The Maine Brewshed Alliance
Clean water makes great beer. Clean, healthy rivers, lakes, and streams are vital to Mainers’ day-to-day lives. They help ensure safe drinking water, good habitat for fish and other wildlife, and support recreation and tourism. They also support our booming craft beer industry.
You Earned It Series - Charity Based Brewing
Many foundations, charities and organizations have impacted our lives here in Maine. In 2019, Bissell Brothers launched the “You Earned It Series” in order to showcase various non-profit organizations in our wonderful Maine community. We utilize our pilot brew house and small-scale fermenter capacity to give any member of our team a chance to develop their own recipe, and then offer it to the tasting room. From these batches, $1000 is donated to the organization of the brewer’s choosing. Through this program, we can make beer styles not normally found in our portfolio, offering our guests a variety outside the normal rotation, and also our team a chance to experiment with new ideas.
Please check out our blog to see more about this community partnership.

Four Weeks of Giving - 2020
In 2019 we found ourselves lucky enough to be established in two communities in Maine, which meant two tasting rooms to operate from and two communities to collaborate with and give back to. Double the fun! In addition to donating all draft sales on Sundays to that week’s cause in each respective location, we collected donations during the week AND donated 1$ per four pack sold of our holiday DIPA, Weary World Rejoices. The holiday spirit flowed with great force this year, and between Milo and Portland we were able to raise over $12,000 for our chosen charities.
Thank you so much to Ruth’s Reusable Resources, Gulf of Maine Research Institute, Cultivating Community and Winter Kids for working with us in Portland. Thank you Toys for Tots, Park Street Outreach, Piscataquis Regional Food Center, and P.E.T.S Piscataquis County for everything up in Milo.
Most of all, thank you to all of you for your support this holiday season. It has made a difference in so many lives in so many different areas. We’re already looking forward to next year! Happy 2020 everyone!
